WP7 has many little nitty-grittys that makes the OS cool. And having it on even amazing hardware from Nokia makes it super sexy.I am using WP7 on my Nokia Lumia 800 for 3 weeks and found it to be amazing. The detail review I posted at <a href="http://www.goospoos.com/2011/12/why-windows-phone/" rel="nofollow">Why Windows Phone</a>

Apple has great ambitions, they want to make the world a better place by offering people better tools, but in order to have that impact, they need to make sure everyone's on board with them. The most aggressive and futuristic designs aren't always accepted and adopted by the masses. Skeuomorphic design reduces the friction dramatically during transitions like this one going from print to digital as we are currently experiencing. Not everyone uses Twitter, half of the people I work with don't even know what an RSS feed reader is, and most importantly, they don't care either, but if you want mass market success, they are the ones you have to win over. Appealing to later adopters would require a whole different set of tactics than designing for earlier adopters, it's sad that only a few designers understand this.

I agree with you on this, it's almost childish for a designer/artist to say "Oh, I offer beautiful visuals, and pixel-perfect designs...but I can't code them" or similar, and doing so just promotes the designer as an arrogant-not-willing-to-learn-artsy-fartsy type person.

I myself am first and foremost artistic and creative, having skills in illustration and graphic design, but unlike others I've embraced coding and backend development - and so far it's paying off.

Instead of asking someone to code my portfolio for me, I can do it myself, and that knowledge is just gonna get bigger and benefit me more and more in the future.

Personally, I wish that people didn't promote themselves as a 'frontend developer' or in contrast a 'backend developer', to me it just seems like the frontend developer is saying 'I can create a pretty design that keeps up with design standards and up-to-date typography, but can't slice it up and code it for you', and the backend developer is saying 'I can't design at all, but I sure know the ins and outs of a website'.

Why not aim to be both? I mean, it's not such a hard thing sometimes (perhaps if you're not creatively inclined it might) when you put in the hours.

But like you've been saying, knowing at least the basics of any developmental coding languages is something that designers should truly consider looking into.

What about the other viewpoint. Being a developer who *CAN* code Objective C and Rails,
How much design ability should they have?

I think the reason this debate is ongoing is because, while it's clear that a deep skillset beats a shallow skillset, and a wide skillset beats a narrow skillset, it's less clear whether it's better to go wide and shallow or deep and narrow.

In other words, is it better to learn a range of skills, or to hone your understanding of one very particular skillset?

I tend to find web designers who can't code ridiculous, purely because I think basic coding skills should actually be considered a core part of the "web designer" skillset. But what about Rails or Objective-C? It's probably useful as a designer to spend the time to sketch out what you consider your core skillset, then branch out until the point at which the skills gained cease to enhance or clearly augment your core skills.

All obvious stuff, but it tends to get muddy depending on the level at which you're working, time constraints, etc etc.

Agreed. I would rather code something up myself than rely on a third party who may not put in the same amount of love & attention that I have on the design. Nothing like giving pouring your heart & soul into a design only for it to be handed to a coder who really doesn't care less.
